The Report Data warehousing has been superseded by the Internet/intranet, Java and other trends as the focus of industry hype. Yet as recently as December 1996, less than a quarter of IT specialists contacted in a piece of telephone research were able to define data warehousing. We must not allow data warehousing to be consigned to the bin of exaggerated marketing. The irony is that todayís competitive pressures make information systems - the deliverables of the data warehousing process - essential rather than desirable. This report evaluates three important aspects of the data warehousing arena. Firstly, nine vendors who to varying degrees and in different ways offer a total data warehousing solution. Secondly, a number of specialist tools addressing the painful realities of the process, ranging from data transformation through meta data management to warehouse administration. Finally, the payoff - we evaluate a selection of state of the art data mining tools. Evaluations in this report Solution Providers: IBM, Information Builders, Informix, Oracle, Pilot Software, PLATINUM technology, Prism Solutions, Red Brick Systems, SAS, Sybase Products:
The Content of the Report Because of the diversity of products included in this report, it did not make sense to provide a feature by feature evaluation and comparison of them. We have, however, identified the strengths and weaknesses of both the solution providers and the tools. The Summary provides a brief overview of the report's findings. The Market looks at some current trends and positions the solution providers and tools vendors. The Issues provides a succinct summary of the major technical and business issues involved in managing and exploiting the data warehousing process. Solution Providers looks at the data warehousing strategies, products and services of nine leading vendors. Products evaluates twenty tools, highlighting strengths and weaknesses. These products cater for a whole range of warehousing processes, from data extraction right through to data mining, and including management of the warehousing process itself. Who Should buy this Report? The prime purpose of this report is to identify and evaluate areas of the data warehousing arena not covered elsewhere by Bloor Research: the solution providers and specialist tools dealing at one extreme with the painful realities of data extraction, transformation and loading, and at the other with state of the art data mining. It will therefore be of particular interest to:
